June's Focus and a recap of May's focus

June Focus:
To help keep things simple, I'm trying to create an over-arching theme each month. May was a no frivolous spend month, and June is going to be movement (specifically, 100 kettlebell swings / day).

My husband and I have decided to help keep each other accountable on this and so far so good! They take less than 5 minutes to complete, and are easy to do in our small home gym. (And when I say small, I mean small! It's pretty much just an 8'x6' platform that my husband constructed tucked into the corner of the mostly unfinished basement. But you know what? It's more than enough for 2 people to do some yoga or cross-fit style workouts!)

And that's that. June is above movement. And for only 5 minutes a day, it's going to be a hard one to say that I don't quite have enough time to do!

May Focus Recap:
I stress shop. A lot.
And it's rarely for things that I need immediately. So, needless to say, I've accumulated a lot of stuff. My goal for May was to curb my frivolous spending, which I'm happy to report I was able to do!

I also created a Habit and Mood tracker (link here) so that I could identify trends of why I was spending my money, and it was a real eye opener!

A lot of my impulse spending happened due to marketing emails (that I promptly unsubscribed from), and to a lesser extent targeted ads (which I either hid, or scrolled past real fast). Surprisingly, it wasn't always related to feelings of anxiety or sadness.

I also had to set some boundaries with a couple of friends who's products I purchase from them (specifically Beauty Counter.. though I love their stuff! I just let them know that right now was not the best time for me to buy, even though there were some great deals to be had, and would buy again in the future [which I will].)

Creating the backyard of your dreams

Let's talk gardens. I LOVE my garden. It's by far my favorite part of our house / yard, but it hasn't been quick. When we first bought our house, the backyard had been over-run by dogs and weeds. Our yard was also almost a foot lower than both of our neighbors, and as such we had a LOT of flooding issues during spring thaw. First step was to raise the yard to be level with the properties on either side of us. With my work, I do a lot of grading planning, so we were able to utilize that to ensure that we could minimize water runoff issues. I cannot stress this enough.  When re-designing an outdoor space.  HAVE A PLAN. Understand where you want water to go. How the sun moves across the yard Can your neighbors see you? Do you want them to? Common travel paths If you have pets, where you want them to do their business Do you want a garden? Do you want to plant flowers every year? Or would you rather lower maintenance perennials? Do you have trees? Do you want trees? Do you have...

How I started

COVID has been a mixed blessing for me. It really caused things to slow down, plans to be changed, and a lot more focus to be placed at home and on my family. I was (and am) still going to work every day, so that didn't change. But that routine has changed for others in my family, which ended up causing a routine change for myself when I'm home from work. Everything felt super out of control, and so dialed it back to what I felt like I could control and started there. What I felt like I could control: Social media consumption My attitude My fitness The food we were eating And that's it. I backed away from social media as I found it very emotionally triggering. Every morning I would write down 3 things I was grateful for, and 3 things I wanted to accomplish that day. I took advantage of free yoga classes every day. I went into meal planning mode. So, in a nutshell, I went back to basic needs and I think I'm going to stay here for a bit. Our province is cautiously startin...
